Definite articles:
In Spanish thereโs four forms when it comes to definite articles, and they are known as โlaโ being feminine singular, โlasโ being feminine plural, โelโ being masculine singular and โlosโ being masculine plural. The English word for these four forms is โtheโ
Example 1:
The cat is hungry - El gato tiene hambre. (also notice how you in Spanish say โThe cat has hungryโ).
Example 2:
The books are heavy - Los libros son pesados. (Since book is in plural, the definite article also changes to plural, therefore itโs los and not el).
When needing to indicate a mixed group of genders in the plural form, you always use the masculine article.
Example:
The cats are hungry - Los gatos tienen hambre.
Indefinite articles:
In English the indefinite articles are โaโ, โanโ or โsomeโ.
Examples:
A cookie - an apple - some books.
In Spanish the indefinite articles is much like the definite articles and also has four forms. โunaโ being feminine singular, โunasโ being feminine plural, โunโ being masculine singular and โunosโ being masculine plural.
Example 1:
Un gato - A cat.
Example 2:
Unos libros - Some books.
Example 3:
Una manzana - An apple.
Example 4:
Unas camisetas - Some t-shirts.
I hope you learned a little about the definite and indefinite articles in Spanish!
Hasta luego!
