Today Iโm going to teach you about the verbal paraphrases in Spanish, cause they were pretty difficult for me to understand at first.
Letโs have a look at five different kinds of verbal paraphrases with an infinitive verb.
Ir + a + infinitiv - This is used to express near future.
Ir is the only word that can be conjugated.
Three examples:
Voy a comiendo - Iโm going to eat.
Vamos a bailar - We are going to dance.
Va a correr - He/she is going to run.
Tener + que + infinitiv - This is used to express a necessity.
Tener is the only word that can be conjugated.
Three examples:
Tienes que comer - You have to eat.
Tengo que trabajar - I have to work.
Tenemos que estudiar - We have to study.
Estar + gerund - This is used to express an ongoing action.
Estar is the only word that can be conjugated.
Three examples:
Estoy comiendo - I eat.
Estรกn trabajando - They work.
Estรกis cantando - You sing (you is 2nd person plural).
Hay + que + infinitiv - This is used as an impersonal way of expressing a necessity.
Hay canโt be conjugated in person and gender, but is conjugated in time.
Three examples:
Hay que vivir la vida - You have to live life.
No hay que tenor miedo - You donโt have to be afraid.
Habรญa que ganar el partido - The game had to be won.
Acabar + de + infinitiv - This is used to express an action that just happened.
Acabar is the only word that can be conjugated.
Three examples:
Acaban de comprar un casa - They just bought a house.
Acabamos de leer un libro - We just read a book.
Acabo de llegar a Barcelona - I just arrived in Barcelona.
Volver + a + infinitiv - This is used to express an action that happens again.
Volver is the only word that can be conjugated.
Three examples:
Vuelves a viajar - You travel again.
Vuelvo a bailar - I dance again.
Volvemos a comer - We eat again.
